This unique exhibition retraces fashion and sartorial customs in the Renaissance and the 19th century, two major periods which both marked the history of the monument.
On the first floor, a series of costumes illustrates the 16th century through the rich fabrics and ornamental patterns used by the French court. Further along, on the second floor, close to ten 19th century outfits echo the arrangement of neo-Renaissance furnishings and the modernity of the restored décor to bring back to life the period when the château opened its doors to the public for the first time. Court attire, walking dresses and formal wear will reveal to you the wealth and diversity of clothing styles but also how silhouettes and the canons of beauty have evolved over the centuries.
Composed and fashioned by historian and costume designer Nathalie Harran, founder of the fine crafting business La Dame d’Atours, these costumes were inspired by period pieces, paintings and engravings.
