At the Museum of Fine Arts

To celebrate Museum Night, the château invites you to an evening of discovery, blending heritage with contemporary perspectives.

Explore the Museum of Fine Arts and let our collections surprise you.
A special focus is placed on the Froberville collection, echoing the exhibition "Faces of Ancestors" presented at the château in 2024. This presentation also marks the 25th anniversary of the Taubira Law, which recognizes slavery as a crime against humanity, and sheds particular light on these objects. Rarely displayed—as some of these busts are usually kept in storage and will soon be transferred to the Intercontinental Museum of Slavery in Mauritius—this Museum Night offers a nearly unique opportunity to rediscover them.

Created in the 19th century by Eugène de Froberville from the faces of people deported from East Africa to Mauritius, these facial casts constitute a rare and valuable testimony to the history of slavery. Thanks to the life stories he collected—studied in particular by historian Klara Royer Bossol—these faces now regain a voice, recounting journeys marked by exile, but also by vibrant cultures and identities.

This sensitive perspective is enriched by the presentation of work by 8th-grade students from the Provinces and Contres middle schools, in partnership with BD Boum: through two comic books, as well as a choreographed dance routine filmed and set to Mauritian music, they offer a contemporary and moving interpretation of this history. Also featured is the special participation of eight students from the Collège de l’Ouest des Tamarins in Mauritius, competing in the 2026 Flame of Equality contest: they have written the fictional diary of Mulotia, a woman enslaved in Mauritius.

As you cross the Château Square, extend the experience by meeting the artists from the House of Magic, who will be taking over the space with their performances full of surprises.

Finally, to conclude the evening, take a seat in the Château courtyard for the Sound and Light show. Monumental projections and immersive effects will enhance the architecture and tell the story of the site in a unique atmosphere.
